SEASON OPENING 2010 NEWSLETTER
Dear Members (Senior, Junior and Families)
Yes it is the time of year once again to be thinking about dusting off your racket and getting active down at the tennis club. That is of course if you haven’t been playing throughout the Winter months which have seen the club maintain a great turn out at club nights on a Wednesday and club mornings on a Sunday.
The AGM was held recently on a very wet Sunday afternoon and the committee is as follows:
President – Gerard Fletcher Club Captain/ Interclub Controller- Linda Brown
Vice President – Julia Sim Social Coordinator – Sharon Orr
Treasurer – Joan Kelly Maintenance Coordinator – Tom Fahey
Secretary – Felicity Murray Mid Week Ladies Convenor – Jenny Fahey
Committee Members – Lesley Stewart, Amanda Chapman.
Brett Clarke and Alan Bird have been seconded on to the committee since the AGM.
Sadly Fiona Macleod, Stacey Cordingley and John Sinden are stepping down from the committee this year but will still remain active members of the club and we thank them for their hard work over last season.
Club Coaches continue to be Julia Sim and Dallas Siso.
Also agreed at the AGM was a small increase in our annual subscriptions which brings us slightly in line with other clubs in the area but still the best value for money around. We firmly believe that our members get the best deal around, with quality tennis (social and competitive), coaching and social events on offer.
Attached to this newsletter (printed version which you will receive by post soon) is your SUBSCRIPTION FORM.
You may choose to pay by cheque or on line by Direct Credit. The number is Westpac Howick 03 0166 0231300 000. Please put your family name in “Particulars” section. You will still need to send in the form if you pay this way. If any details have changed please notify the club. Please make sure we have your email address as it makes it easier to pass on information and we would like to use the email as our primary source of communication.
If you are not rejoining the club please inform the office by email bbtc@xtra.co.nz or contact Joan Kelly 534 8170 and let her know. You are also entitled to a refund of $10 on the return of your key.

Please note key exchange will take place on the weekend of September 18th and 19th between 9 am – 11am. All paid up members may come along and change their key. If you are an existing member you do not need to pay for a key if you already have one. If you are not rejoining then you will receive $10 reimbursement when you return your key.
SENIOR WEEKEND SUMMER INTERCLUB
Your interclub entry form and details have already been emailed to you. Please attend to this with urgency if you intend playing. Interclub is due to start early September, and entries must be in to Linda by August 4th at the latest but preferably ASAP. Please note that your subs plus ball money must all be settled prior to interclub commencing.
SENIOR INTERCLUB EXPECTATIONS
It is necessary to remind all players about the etiquette of Senior Interclub.
Senior Interclub is a team competition and if you commit to being a member of a team you must be available to play the matches scheduled. It has become a very difficult task for the captains to be regularly finding replacements for their players. If you are scheduled to play a match but are unable to fulfil the commitment, and this should happen on occasion, not regularly, you must inform your captain in good time and the onus is on you to find your own replacement.
Players are also expected to stay and support their team mates and attend the match tea at the conclusion of play even if their own games have finished earlier. If it is a home match, all team members are required to bring a plate of food for the after match tea.
The above expectations apply to all team members including Juniors who have been permitted to play Senior Interclub.
MID WEEK LADIES OPENING DAY Thursday August 26th 9am.
A fun tournament and delicious morning tea. New members very welcome, with an hour of free coaching from 9:15 for the new ladies or those who are a little rusty. Contact Jenny Fahey 532 8325 for more info.
CLUB SOCIAL TENNIS- Wed 7pm, Sun 9am
Over the last season, the Committee has endeavoured to organise these sessions. There have been a few hiccups but generally it has been very successful, with a good turn out throughout Winter even. If any regular attendees would like to help by being on a roster to organise a session occasionally, please contact Linda Brown 278 1003. This would be of great help to the committee.
FOURTHCOMING TENNIS EVENTS
Yes ! After this successful event last year, we will be holding it again. It is for all Senior interclub players/teams to have a team practise and some team coaching prior to the start of the season in early Sept!! It will be on Saturday August 21st from 12pm onwards. Please all bring a plate. Come along to kick start the season and create some team spirit. So mark this in your diary if you intend being in an interclub team this year. More info to follow.
A night team competition is scheduled to commence on Sept 7 for 6 weeks. We plan to hold it for 3 weeks with an interlude over the school holidays followed by another 3 weeks after the holidays. It will be held on a Tuesday night with the hope that all interclub players wishing to practise will join this organised competition as well as those who are not in a team but want a bit of competition. Play will commence at 7:30 pm and finish at 9 pm each evening. Format includes a doubles and a mixed match each approximately 45 mins. All standards of play accommodated. Good tennis is promised to all and please support our efforts. An entry sheet will be on the upstairs board.
Cost; $30. Enter on notice board upstairs.
2 Beginner / Refresher Courses will commence in August. Monday night and Friday morning. Both will involve coaching and matchplay. Each course will run for 5 weeks. If you have any friends who would like to learn to play tell them about this. They do not need to be members to attend.
FIT410S classes (cardio tennis) will also commence in August on a Monday night and Thursday morning. These have proved really popular for having a good workout whist still hitting and improving your tennis. Great for all standards of play.
More details will be out soon regarding both these options above.
SOCIAL EVENTS
MID WINTER XMAS DINNER
This is being held this coming Saturday 24th July. It really is a fun evening not to be missed. If you are not already coming I am sure Sharon could fit you in. If you would like to attend contact sorr@ihug.co.nz or 533 8204 ASAP
EXTRAS
RACKET RESTRINGING
Julia has recently upgraded her stringing machine to an electronic one. This has a noticeable effect on the playing and feel of your strings, so if you are ready for a restring give Julia a call and experience the difference. This is a good time of year to have a change of strings and remember you should restring in a year as many times as you play in a week! Cost; Approx $40 depending on string type used.
JUNIOR WINTER SQUAD COACHING
Commences on the 2nd Wednesday of term, 28th July, for 5 weeks until the Summer season starts. This is a good chance to get your ‘eye in’ for the coming season so contact Julia to book your child in.
PRIVATE LESSONS/SMALL GROUP LESSONS
Dallas Siso is available for private coaching. Contact him 021 121 1004 or 948 2001 to book in for some lessons prior to the start of the season. Remember once the season starts he gets very busy so get in ahead of time. Over the next 6 weeks he has more time available than when the season commences.
IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS/QUERIES PLEASE EMAIL THEM TO US. Also check out our great website at www.bbtc.co.nz
